Dark Witch by Nora Roberts

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a trilogy about the land we’re drawn to, the family we learn to cherish, and the people we long to love…

With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.

Ireland.

County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations—and where her destiny awaits.

Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives.

When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he’s three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.

Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself—and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope—and love—alive…

My Review: Dark Witch

5 STARS

I love the characters. Lots of drama, action and romance. The story is gripping for the most part.
The problems with the book is too many sex scenes and have to wait for the next book to come out.
The setting is Ireland the past and now.
The pace is good and keeps you reading to find out what would happen next.
I bought the book on amazon and will read the next two books of the series.

Whiskey Rebellion (An Addison Holmes Mystery #1) by Liliana Hart

WHISKEY REBELLION: AN ADDISON HOLMES MYSTERY My name is Addison Holmes, and I teach history at James Madison High School in Whiskey Bayou, Georgia. You might be under the assumption that my life went to the dogs when my fiance left me at the altar for the home economics teacher, or when I got notice that my apartment building was going to be condemned, or even when I was desperate enough to strip to my unmentionables to earn some extra cash. The truth is that I'm pretty much used to disasters following me around on a daily basis, but I could have gone without finding my principal dead in the parking lot of a seedy gentlemen's club. After the initial shock of finding my first dead body, which included throwing back shots of Jack Daniels like it was water, I decided to take stock of my life. I was in a desperate situation and if the school board ever found out I'd been a stripper, even a bad stripper, I'd be jobless as well as fiance-less and homeless. Fortunately, I had a friend who felt sorry enough for me to give me a job doing some surveillance work at her detective agency. Not to mention the fact that I was now able to stick my nose into other people's business for a good cause, find a murderer, and pick up helpful tips from an incredibly attractive detective. Come check out my story and be thankful your life is relatively normal. Other Full-Length Titles by Liliana Hart DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS CATCH ME IF YOU CAN ALL ABOUT EVE PARADISE DISGUISED What readers are saying: Romancing the Book - "An entertaining, fun read." Romanceaholic Book Review - "This book is hysterical. It's a true comedy of errors...A perfect summer read... lighthearted and funny" Reader review at Barnes & Noble - "I haven't read a book this funny since the first few Janet Evanovich books... A definite recommendation for everyone."

My Review: Whiskey Rebellion

This is a cozy murder mystery. This is a funny story. The characters are likeable.
Addison Holmes is a mess. She is a teacher and to earn extra money she tries stripping. She does not even last to finish her first number when she sees her principle in the audience.

Addison is being stalked. She also has a enemy who is also a teacher. In fact she stole her fiancé right before the wedding.
I liked Addison and look forward to reading more about Addison in the future. One thing else about Addison is she keeps finding dead bodies.
I think I got the book free on amazon.

Assisted: An Autobiography by John Stockton, Kerry L. Pickett

Description Assisted:

Foreword by Karl Malone

A fast, gritty, durable player who could read a basketball floor as well as anyone who ever played the game, John Stockton left the NBA after nineteen seasons with the Utah Jazz, holding a massive assist record, including the career mark (15,806). He also twice led the league in steals—with a career total of 3,265—and retired as the NBA’s all-time leader. And during Stockton’s career, the Jazz never missed the playoff Coach Frank Layden said, “Nobody thought that he was going to be this good. Nobody. But the thing was, nobody measured his heart.” John’s autobiography, Assisted, pulls back the curtain on his very personal life to show fans a thoughtful recounting of the people, places, and events that have connected with John along his path of extraordinary success. This book clearly illustrates the importance of his family, his faith, and his unparalleled competitive spirit.

My Review:Assisted: An Autobiography by John Stockton, Kerry L. Pickett

5 STARS

I found myself reading and enjoying to get to know more about the player John Stockton. It also brought lots of memories to my mind.
Like the shot that sent them to the finals. Had to wear purple that week. How when I used to watch the Jazz games my little girl loved it when they announced Stockton to Malone.

This is a easy to follow book. I did not want to put it down. I liked how hard he worked and the values that John Stockton has. It shows some good insights in life lessons.

This is a book for sports fans, for inspiring people of all ages to go for your dreams with hard work. For the young and old. For men and woman to enjoy. I think a broad range of people will enjoy John's story.

As a fan of Jazz basketball thank you for your hard work. We are glad you played in Utah for so long. You represented the Jazz and USA Dream teams well.

I admit to stop watching the Jazz after you than Karl left. It was not as much fun without you.
I liked getting to know your family better and how important they are to you. Thanks for letting us see your journey and meeting your friends.

I liked the background of how much it meant to be on the Olympics team meant for you. I find it hard to believe that no one recognized you in Spain. Especially wearing a t-shirt with your picture on it.

It was fun to see the pictures. Hear the stories and see how technology is changing the game. Too see how much you love the game and how it was always watching and learning to be better.

Christmas in Snowflake Canyon by Raeanne Thayne

5 STARS

I love the covers of this series Hope's Crossing, even on ebooks they make a difference. I have enjoyed Hope's Crossing and this Christmas is the best one for me yet. It has a spoiled leading lady that I did not think I was going to like, Wounded soldiers, Christmas surprises, a lot of humor, relationships between lots of familiar characters, romance and Hope's Crossing bring together a good story.

I admit to not liking Genevieve in previous books. Now I love her and want more of her.(I admit I wanted her one secret to come out) She has grown up enough to do the hard things in life by sincerely apologizing to people she has offended in the past.
Genevieve has been brought home from Paris by her parents. She gets into some trouble and gets community service at Wounded warriors. (What I don't understand how come the lawyer did not get into trouble by Stepping hard on her foot first not suffer.)

Dylan Caine wants to be left alone in his cabin up the canyon. He has lost an eye and part of his arm. He is the town hero. He wants nothing to do with the Wounded Warriors program. So when he gets into trouble and gets community service at Wounded Warriors he is not so happy for that.

Dylan's family has been worried about him and wants him to socialize more. He has 5 older brothers and a sister. Plus his father around for him.

We get to see the Wounded Warriors program a lot more in this story. Their are so many touching scenes.

Some members of Hope's Crossing don't think too much about Genevieve but most change their minds as they see her and get to see what she has grown into.

This book is good. If you have read and liked her other books in this series than you will want to read this one for sure. Lots of good things inside to bring smiles as you read. This is a clean read.

No one has ever felt sorry for Genevieve Beaumont. After all, she has everything money can buy. That is, until she discovers her fiancé has been two-timing her and she's left with two choices: marry the philanderer to please her controlling father or be disinherited and find a means to support herself.

Dylan's struggling to adjust after his time in Afghanistan, and the last thing he needs is a spoiled socialite learning about the real world for the first time. True, she may have unexpected depths and beauty to match. But he knows he could never be the man she needs…and she knows he could never be the man she thinks she wants. So why are they each hoping that a Christmas miracle willl prove them both wrong?

Wyoming Bold (Wyoming Men #3) by by Diana Palmer

4 STARS

I love the cover of the book. The Mystery of the book starts right off the bat. A knock at back door middle of snow storm warns him his life is in danger because she saw it in a vision. The drama, suspense, action keep going strong through out the whole book. Your not quite figured out who is after Dalton.

The secondary characters are a lot of familiar faces that fans of Diana Palmer's have met before in previous book. Especially the ones in Texas.

Dalton Kirk was ambushed and left for dead. Now it seems he is a target someone wants taken out for what information he has forgotten. At least that is what a local physic says.

Merissa Baker has been called witch and has been made fun of her whole life because she sometimes sees visions of the future. Her mom before her has the same talent but not as strong.

She has walked in a snow storm to warn Dalton and she knew facts about him that she should not know. Some of the things she tells him proves pretty fast that she does see the future sometimes.

Dalton starts to fall for Merissa pretty fast. He hints to her but does not want to move to fast.
Now someone wants to hurt Merissa because of things she knows and because Dalton cares for her.

Dalton calls in a company to add security cameras around the ranch but he feels something is off with the worker. He calls Rourke a contact he has to come up and help with security. He was right his ranch was bugged.

It is very fast paced book. It also leaves you wanting to read the next book in the series to get more answers. There is a couple of love scenes that I skipped over and some violence.

The setting of the book happens in Texas and Wyoming as they try and figure out how two different cases are connected. They know they are through Merissa visions.

Upon A Winter's Night by Karen Harper

4 STARS

I enjoyed reading Upon A Winter's Night except it kept me up late because I had to find out who the guilty person was. My guess was wrong. Very suspenseful.

The characters are different for a Amish story. Lydia Brand is adopted. She has no idea who her real parents are. She works in her father's furniture store. Her parents want her to marry their bookkeeper. Lydia keeps telling them she does not want to marry Gid. She volunteers at the farm next door to help feed the animals. Lydia loves the camels.

Josh has a different farm from others. He has camels, donkeys, sheep. In the summer he runs a petting zoo. He spent 4 years out in the world working for a zoo till he came back and joined the Amish Church. Now it is Dec. He rents his animals out for Christmas events.

Lydia finds a woman in a field one snowy night while she is looking for a camel who got loose. She is not sure if the woman is alive and she finds a note in her hand that she picks up to try and read. Puts it in her gloves. Puts her cape on the woman and runs to get help.

Their are a lot of problems that they need to call the police and emergency a lot of different times. They don't have phones so it is more stressful to get the help they need.
It makes me think how much I take simple things in my life for granted. Like being able to call or drive a car.

Lots of drama, action. It is exciting book that keeps your attention. A few of the secondary characters we have met in previous books. This is a clean read. Does not get much into the Amish beliefs. Just about their Christmas beliefs. Their is some violence in the story.

Root for divorced dad Austin Carr, a funny, oversexed scamp who’ll use anything and everything to get his kids back.

Divorced father Austin Carr wakes up every day in a beat-up camper, parked on someone else’s private property. Why? Because his alimony and child support payments were established by New Jersey’s family court system when his income was double, and for the last two years he has failed to earn the legally mandated monthly nut. He’s had his savings drained, his Maxima repossessed, his salary attached, and his visiting rights suspended. He bought the twelve-year-old Chevy pick-up with the rusty camper for $800 last month because another landlord tossed his butt in the street. Will stretching the rules, his own morals, and the boundaries of common sense raise the cash needed to get his kids back? Or will his big mouth and bad behavior set him up for a nasty double-cross? Find out if Austin can redeem himself and win back his children.

My Review: Big Numbers

4 STARS

This book is different from what I usually like to read. The characters are ones you can admire or mostly like. Lots of swearing, violence. So why rate it 4 stars. Because I could not put it down. I felt bad about Austin. The only luck he seemed to have was bad luck. I could not stop reading because I did not know what was coming but figured it was not good for Austin.

Austin is a Stockbroker who has lost everything. He is living in his truck with camper shell. He parks in different parking lots. Mainly his favorite Mexican Bar. His boss likes him but his supervisor hates him. He owes child support because his amount was for when he was doing well.
The one thing I really admire about Austin is his love for his kids. He worries about how he will pay so he can see his kids again. He gets creative to be supportive of them.

Austin reminds me of Charlie Brown. You keep hoping things will workout for him. But you know that Lucy will jerk the ball out from under again. So with Austin I want something to go right for him. I want him to make right choices.

In a car chase he has 4 or 5 different folks chasing him. Lots of action. The pace is fast. He gets into trouble rescued then more trouble. Lots of drama, crimes and twists and turns that keep you turning the page to see what comes next.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review and be part of its blog tour.

Egypt Rising

Some ancient secrets should remain buried.

An American teenager in Cairo finds herself in the middle of the Egyptian revolution fleeing militant Islamic extremists. She leads her worst enemy and the boy she thinks about much too often on the adventure of a lifetime. When she discovers an ancient artifact that was buried for thousands of years, she learns that very powerful people will stop at nothing, including murder, to learn the secrets of a long-dead civilization.

My Review: Egypt Rising

5 STARS

Egypt Rising is a thrilling adventure aimed YA books. It is a blend of ancient Egypt, current troubles, fantasy of Atlantis and their powers and knowledge, combined with high school issues and clicks. I did not want to put the book down. It is also a clean book, with some violence in it.

This book took some twists in it. I did not see them coming. It is the first book that I have read of Stan Schatt but am going to look for more from him.

It makes you want to look more into history and discover things. Olivia has gone on digs all her life with her father. She has learned how to read ancient Egypt. Lots of other things her father has taught her. She hopes to be a Egypt archeologist too some day.

Olivia goes to the American high school in Egypt because her father teaches their. She has one friend who is a native Aasuma. She is overweight and smart. Her father is famous but now a lot of people think he has gone overboard. They are not rich

Taylor is one of the popular students who does not like Olivia. Her father is rich and powerful and he admires Olivia for some reason. She thinks Olivia father is crazy for some of his beliefs about who built the pyramids and looking for proof.

Paul is good friends with Taylor but he is also polite too Olivia and is not one of the ones who looks down on her. His father is mysterious no one knows what he does.

Aasuma family believes in the old fashion rules. About how she is to act and dress. Olivia and Aasuma are good friends although so different.

I was very entertained reading Egypt Rising. It is a good mix of elements in the story.

Sapphire scrambles to keep the chaos at bay, unaware that someone else is tracking her as well. A serial killer from her past is back and will stop at nothing to get his vengeance.

My Review: Silencing Sapphire by Mia Thompson

4 stars

This is a thriller mystery. The characters are not to deep except for Sapphire. I found myself rooting for Sapphire. Also wondered why the cops were putting so much effort in catching the serial catcher over stopping serial killers themselves.
There are a lot of swear words and gritty scenes.
Sapphire is a rich social lite who is engaged to a even richer guy who she does not like let alone want to marry. For years she has spent most of her time stopping serial killers. She likes detective Aston Ridder.

Detective Aston Ridder's main goal is to catch the serial catcher. He does not realize the woman he can't forget is actually the person he seeks.

This is book two of the series. I have not read the first one. The story does not end with this book. I want to read the next book now and not wait for it.

Sapphire goes undercover to become what the serial killer wants and right now he is hunting strippers in one club. So Sapphire while getting ready to walk down the isle is being the worst stripper in the club.

The plot has a few different story lines in it. Which make it interesting and when you think it is settled more stuff happens.

Christmas at Cardwell Ranch by B.J. Daniels

4 stars

Christmas at Cardwell Ranch was full of surprises. It had some twists that I was surprised with and some I had guessed at. The name really fits the book too. I never paid attention to much about the Cardwell of Texas.

The plot was good I had wondered why Tag did not go to cops but the reason was very well done. There is a lot of drama, suspenseful, some romance, lots of bad guys? Had to keep reading to see how it would all work out.

I like Tag Cardwell. He is trying to figure what is going on. He does not know who to trust. His father is not very welcoming when he shows up at his cabin to surprise his dad with a Christmas visit.

Tag goes to the Canyon bar to hear his father play. When he is leaving he sees bumps into a drunk lady and then sees her getting into a truck. Then he talks to Lily McCabe as she is looking for the other women. She is not to impressed with Tag.

Lily is helping her brother over the holidays by working at his bar. This way they get to spend the holidays together while she is off from teaching college.

Lily and Tag end up trying to figure out what is going on. After Tag finds something in his coat pocket that he did not put their.

This is a pretty fast paced book. Lots of things going on. Tag is not sure who to trust after he is lied to a few times.

I enjoyed it. The snow sounds good on these hot August days. I wonder if we will get to meet Tag's other four brothers or if Lily's brother Ace will get his own book? I will want to see if their story get told.

My Review:A Maverick under the Mistletoe by Brenda Harlen

4 STARS

Finally we find out who the new mayor is. I have been waiting a few months to find out.
Sutter Traub has come home when he heard about the flood of Rust Creek. He left behind his family and girl when he left. I can see why Sutter thought he should go after what his mom told him.

Paige Dalton stood up for Sutter and his brother when the debate was over and a stunt was pulled to keep a Traub from being Mayor. Paige has been teaching her class in her front room since the flood.

I like the Characters of Rust Creek. Paige and Sutter have a lot of history together and both got hurt when they broke up. Paige would not leave with Sutter. Sutter felt he could not stay.
Sutter did not want his brother Forrest to do another tour in the military. He thought one tour was enough. It tore his family and town apart.

Sutter now has a business in Seattle Washington area. He has never forgotten Paige. He wants to try again now that he still sees that he cares for her. The same problems are their. Paige does not want to live in another state. Sutter's business his in Washington. They both have tried to find others to help them forget.

Sutter has to face a lot of anger from people. He stood up for what he believed. Now he is trying to mend fences where they need to. It is hard to ask forgiveness and receive it.

It is nice to see old friends from other books and catch up on how Russ Creek is getting back after the flood.
Mostly character driven dealing with the past and building on for the future. Their is some love scenes that I skipped over. was a quick read.

Malicious Mischief by Marianne Harden (Rylie Keyes Mystery #1)

Description

Is it strange to have the unemployment office on speed dial? Not for twenty-four-year-old college dropout Rylie Keyes. However, her current job at a small retirement home is worlds more important than all her past gigs. Fact is, if she loses this one, she'll fail to stop the forced sale of her grandfather's home, a modest lakeside bungalow that has been in the family for ages. But to keep her job she needs to figure out the truth behind the death of a senior citizen found murdered in her care.

The victim was thought to be a penniless man with a silly grudge against Rylie. However, his enemies will do whatever it takes to keep their part in his murder secret.

Forced to dust off the PI training she must keep hidden from her ex-detective grandfather, Rylie has to juggle the attentions of two very sexy, very different cops who both arouse and fluster her at the same time. And as she trudges through the case, she has no idea that along the way she just might win, or lose, a little piece of her heart.

My Review:Malicious Mischief by Marianne Harden

4 STARS

This is a funny mystery. Rylie is a fun character. So much happens to her. The other characters are different too. Some of them I just have to know what happens next to them.

The pacing of this story is fast. Everything happens right after each other. Rylie determined to find her boss innocent. She has 24 hours to find the real murder before her grandfather gets home.

Rylie has been in love with the boy next door her good friend police officer Zach O'Neil. She has worked for four months driving senior citizens around from the center. She was abandoned by her mother and has no clue who her father is. She wants to be a P.I. but her grandfather does not want her to be one.

Zach shot someone and killed them in the line of duty and has a lot of trouble with it still. He tells Rylie that he only wants short flings. He cares for her though.

Solo is Rylie's friend and co-worker. He left the NFL to try and be a circus clown. He is big and brave. I like him and he brings a lot of laughter.

Rylie has been in two accidents with in six hours. The second one brings lot of laughter till they find a dead body in the van with her.

I smiled a lot reading this. Though not at the dead bodies piling up around Rylie. Lots of suspects with motives it seems to be. The suspense keeps you guessing till the end about who the murder is and why. Lots of laughter and drama. Did not want to put the book down and can't wait till the next one comes out.

I was given this ebook to review in exchange for honest review from NetGalley.

MY REVIEW: Relative Danger

4 STARS

I enjoyed the characters in Relative Danger. Their is plenty of drama, danger and action but what else would you expect in a high school. The janitor was found dead. The police don't know if it was murder or a accident.

Cealie Gunther is a older woman. She has flown into town to see her granddaughter graduate from high school. She has promised her daughter on her death bed that she would be their for the events she would miss. When she surprises her granddaughter she finds out that she might not graduate after all and especially with high honors.

Cealie decides to be a substitute teacher at the high school and see what she can find out. She wants to see her granddaughter graduate. Cealie's son is still in a depressive state from losing his wife. Cealie' a widow herself and she knows a little about depression after death. Her ex-lover has come to town and opened a new Cajun restaurant. She keeps thinking about Gil. Even when she was the one to break it off. She wanted to find herself before losing herself in another man.

Kat is supposed to graduate soon. She has a teacher friend that has made a difference in her life. That teacher has been questioned by the police in the janitor's death. She won't talk to Kat anymore. Kat has been staying home from school lately. She has also broken up with her boyfriend lately.

Gil still cares about Cealie and he is glad to see her in his new restaurant. He seems to have a new girl friend that Cealie calls legs. He wants to go to Kat's graduation with Cealie.

The mystery was good and kept me guessing till the end. Cealie found that high school has changed a lot since she taught years ago. This book I felt dealt with relationships more than a mystery novel. Even though their was a lot of danger at the high school and around Cealie and Kat.

I look forward to reading the next book and hope to see more of Cealie and Gil. Wonder what her cousin wants too.

My Review: Diner Impossible by Terri L Austin

4 STARS

Diner Impossible is the third book of the series but is the first one I have read. It was entertaining. Part of the story was light hearted and part was sad. The Characters were all over the place. I was surprised about what ones I liked. I would have thought I would be on the trekers not Klingons side. Like the crooks over police chief. Daughters side over mothers. Also clean read.

Lots of drama of all kinds. Plot was good never show who the guilty party was till the end or the motive. Waitress Rose was asked to look into the murder of police chief secretary with proving the police chief was innocent by two different people. One was by a cop who did not think he was guilty but was not working the case. The other was her mother.

Roseland mother does not approve of her lifestyle. It was sad that no one really knew she was her daughter. Her parents do not approve of her dropping out of college and working as a waitress and not living a high society lifestyle. Their are a lot of relationships that are having trouble in this story.

Another mystery that she is trying to help is between the Klingons and Starfleet officers. They had a laser completion and winner's prize was stolen. Everyone's honor is at stake. Lots of humor coming from them. I admit I like Star Trek but had no idea about their clubs.

Rose's boyfriend runs gambling games and clubs and The police chief owes him a lot of money. Rose's coworkers are a lot of fun too. While her family is high Society and a lot of suspects are also part of Country club set.

I would read more books about Rose Strickland in the future. Would love to read the first two books of the series someday.

The House on Main Street by Shirlee McCoy (Apple Valley )

Description

In Apple Valley, Washington, friends are always near, neighbors have no secrets—even if they’d like to—and long-held wishes have a way of coming true…

Interior designer Tessa McKenzie has built a good life far from her Washington hometown. She intends to get back to it—as soon as she sells the cluttered Victorian house and antiques shop she inherited from her sister, Emily. But leaving Apple Valley a second time won’t be so easy. There’s her grieving nephew, Alex, to consider. And there’s Sheriff Cade Cunningham, the adolescent crush who could easily break her heart again if she let him.

To Cade, Tessa was simply his high school sweetheart’s kid sister. But now there’s no denying she’s a beautiful and caring grown woman, one he’d like to get to know. Except that Tessa is determined to leave again. If Cade wants to change her mind, he’ll have to show her that small-town life has its lovable side—and that he does too. Most of all, he’ll have to convince Tess they’re good together, and that every step has led her right where she was always meant to be…

My Review:The House on Main Street by Shirlee McCoy

5 STARS

I loved the House on Main Street. It has a good story. Strong characters, romance, mystery, touches your emotions in many ways, clean story.

Tessa McKenzie has come back to Apple Valley to bury her sister and husband. She wants to clean up her house and sell it. Take her nephew Alex and her Aunt Gertrude back to Virginia with her.
Tessa does not want to see Cade the man she had a crush on for years who liked her sister Emily.

Gertrude raised both of her nieces in Apple Valley when their mom dropped the girls off at young age and disappeared. She does not want to move. She is feisty. Loves to argue with Tessa.

Alex hardly talks, he loves to play piano and composes music. He has autisms.

We meet a lot of characters of Apple Valley and a lot of them are single. It sets up for lots of stories to be told in the future. I know I want to come back to Apple Valley and read them.

The setting is Apple Valley, Washington a small town

A angel figurine that has been in the Riley family for generations is stolen. Alex has strong feelings for it. Gertrude things now the family is cursed because it is not kept in the Riley house and its her fault.

The Eggstone Murders: A Starfire Mystery by Herbert L. Smith Review and Givaway

Book Details:
The Eggstone Murders: A Starfire Mystery
Genre: Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Published by: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform
Release Date: July 13, 2013
Number of Pages: 218

Synopsis
A thick-headed sheriff, a young, unsure, wannabe detective, and a savvy older criminal-turned- investigator, are only the beginning of the cast of characters included in this story of small-town life in southwestern Iowa, set in 1953. Meet them on the streets of Hillville, at the town square, or at a big-business farm nearby. They all have a story to tell, and some of them have a few things to hide. Others have quite a few.

Enjoy the storms, the intrigues, and the mid-western hospitality –including the wonderful food – of Hillville, Iowa, as its down-to-earth folk work their way through the dailyness of their quiet lives.

There are the murders, of course, which cause dismay, but the con-man turned detective, Guy, is able to resolve them, after a few hard bumps, and the guilty are punished – or, as is sometimes Guy’s choice, forgiven.
As a whole, it’s a pleasant outing on an Iowa summer’s day.

About The Author

Herb Smith was born and raised in ‘Hillville,’ Iowa, a town situated close to Omaha, across the mighty Missouri River and a few miles south. He lived there until he was a young adult, and gradually made his way out into the rest of the world from that unique beginning.

He has lived and worked on four continents and many different countries, and has crisscrossed the Atlantic more times than he wants to remember. (The trip was fun for the first few times. After that it was more painful.)

His books include: Cairo, The Mother Of The World, Crossing Borders, The Great Sphinx Of Amun-Ra, Songs Of Saints And Angels, The Names Of The Days – A Novel Of Egypt’s 2011 Revolution, and other, as-yet-unpublished, Starfire Mystery stories.

He is a musician and composer, teacher, and reader. All those things add up to a lifetime of books, music, and looking into a computer screen.

He and his wife, Glenda, live in Eugene, Oregon, where they retired several years ago.

My Review: The Eggstone Murders: A Starfire Mystery

3 1/2 STARS

I kept debating on how many stars. This is not your typical cozy mystery. The main character sometimes I like and others do not. In fact their are a lot of charactes that I really did not like. The plots had some nice twists in it. I would have liked a little more interaction with key players outside the main mystery.

Guy LeFevre is a crook. He decides to retire to a small town so he disappeared and landed as Guy. He embezzled a lot of money. He decides to invest in a young mans dream of owning his own detective agency. He ends up helping him with his cases.

Caleb Starfire drives people around as a taxi service. He decides he needs another job so he wants to become a detective. He read a book a few times and magazine. Caleb swears a lot. It was bothering me. It was the same word and didn't even make sense sometimes how he was using it. It also bothered Guy.

Caleb first case is actually a embezzler case and he gets Guy to help him. Guy does and he understands bookkeeping more than Caleb.

The next case is a murder with lots of suspects. Lots of other crimes comes out. The Sheriff likes one suspect but Guy is leaning toward another. Caleb does not think the pretty woman can be the guilty ones. Their are a lot of secrets in the quiet little town that Guy moves too.

I like best the little scenes in Guys boarding house with other members of the house. Wish their was a little more of them.
I also like out at the farm the scenes with the cook that break up the heavy scenes.

I think my main problem is I did not agree with a lot of the choices Guy made. That I did not see much of a better side of him. At least not enough to care about any of the characters.

I would like to see where this series might go to next. It is a fast read.

“I kept having this dream about these twins, and then I just decided to run with it. I wrote the beginning, the end, and then filled in the middle.”

KayCee finished the book in 8 months and then decided to share the book online. After seeing people get interested in the book and the characters, she decided to write another book and turn Twisted into a series.

KayCee has finished four novels in the Twisted series and is currently working on the fifth book.

My Review: Twisted
4 stars

I liked twisted. There are quite a few surprising twists to the book and others that I guessed where it was heading.
This is aimed at YA. Most of the characters are teenagers. The only parents we hear about are very disappointed ones. I wanted to shake and yell at them. I got involved in the book. This is a clean read. Their is way too much underage drinking going on.

Cayden is adopted. His sister Kylie is just months younger than him and is adopted too. Their adopted mom could not take her husband drinking so she left them with him. He is always drunk. Cayden finds that he has special gifts he is faster and stronger than normal. He is pretty good at hiding his talents. His sister does not even know.

Camilla is Cayden's best friend forever. Her parents are always traveling. She is lucky to see them at all. Dana Cayden's girlfriend is jealous of Cam. Camilla is tired of being alone all the time.

I can't wait to read the second book. I have lots of questions about some of the other characters in the story. How are they making their money. We really don't see much of Cayden's sister Kylie she is always with others.

Lots of drama, some action, some mystery, lot of relationships and special powers. It is entertaining to read and did not want to say goodbye to the characters yet.

I was given this ebook to read. The opinions are all mine.

Buried Leads (A Nichelle Clarke Headlines in Heels Mystery #2) by LynDee Walker

My Review Buried leads by LynDee Walker

4 stars

I like how Nichelle Clarke is smart, can run in heels but not flats, She works hard. Trying to be the best and first to get a story.
She does not back down from threats. She also cares about people, her dog and friends. Nichelle is a reporter in Virginia. Crime beat.

Nichelle has friends in FBI, ATF, local police and mafia. I really want to go and read the first in the series.Front Page Fatality (A Nichelle Clarke Headlines in Heels Mystery. They reference it a few times or least the events in it. It sounds good. Buried Leads stands alone though. You meet some of the characters in the first book.

Buried Leads is full of humor, characters, drama and action. It is a clean read. I had no clue till it was revealed. So high on suspense of how the story Nichelle is working on turns out. Did not want to put the book down till through.

On one day Nichelle has four different stories but because she was busy she was scooped on one. She competes against Charlie a t.v. reporter who covers the same stuff as her. Their is also a copy editor who wants part of her beat and is sleeping with the boss to try and get it from her.

Nichelle's mafia friend shows up a lot at her friend and she is attracted to him but leery of him too. Then a old boyfriend from Texas with ATF as moved into town. He wants Nichelle to give him another chance. Two guys but their works is on opposite sides.

Nichelle is working on different stories but they are starting to run into each other. She runs into a lot of dead ends before she solves her story. Because she is interested in different people she meets she makes contacts that help her.

The story pacing is good. It does not get bogged down. I like the tone of the book. Their are a lot of secondary characters that add a richness, humor to the story. I want to know if Troy gets his scholarship and makes it to college. What will happen to his mom now?
I liked how happy he was to have met Parker and follow him one day.

How Parker got involved and made a difference in a college athlete. How he teases Nichelle.

I would love to read more from LynDee Walker in the future. especially if it is as good as Buried Leads.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it by NetGalley and Henry Press.

Sherlock's Home: The Adventure of the Contentious Crone (Finn Sherlock)

Sherlock’s Home
The Adventure of the Contentious Crone
by Pamela Rose

18299421
Synopsis:
Life imitating art? That’s Finn Sherlock’s first bizarre thought when she stumbles across a dead body within the Civil War era hiding place inside Sherlock’s Home Mystery Bookstore. Thinking that it’s her gnome-like Uncle Oz costumed to play the part of a fortunetelling druid for ‘All Hallows’ Eve,’ she is relieved when she learns that the hooded figure is not her favorite uncle, but the town’s favorite outcast, Odds Bodkins.

Unfortunately, murder suspects abound due to the fact that the mystery bookstore and its adjoining 221b Bakery were the first stop on the Leapers Point’ Halloween circuit and any number of people were on the scene for the annual ‘Fright Night’ tour. More than that, Odds Bodkins was almost universally detested; far too many would agree that the assisted demise of the loathsome little witch was more treat than trick…possibly even a community service.
With a little help from Uncle Oz and her identical twin sister, Echo, Finn sets out to discover who amongst the congenial southern townsfolk had the audacity and plain bad manners to murder the contentious crone right under the Sherlock family noses. Was it the fire and brimstone preacher Willie Ping? ‘Blooming Idiots’ talented but slightly mental florist? Or what about fluffy nonagenarian Eula May Binks…can anybody really be that sugary sweet? But, when the local Sheriff, Wavy Davey, learns that it was Uncle Oz’s Halloween prop – a bona fide hangman’s noose – that was the murder weapon, there’s more heating up inside the 221b Bakery than just the ovens.

Join the heart of Dixie’s new sleuth Finn Sherlock as she resolutely follows in the footsteps of her namesake to create more than a little mayhem and detect a folksy murderer. Sherlock’s Home Mystery Bookstore…where the game is always afoot.

About The Author:

Many moons ago on an Indiana farmstead My Weekly Reader became Pamela’s first true love, miraculously discovered at the behest of her somewhat humorless third-grade teacher, notorious among her students for being a bit of a pickle-puss. About the same time Pamela realized her ability to cleverly manipulate prose when she read aloud in class her very first book report on a small, much beloved book appropriately named Twig. She was startled to learn subsequently that nearly all of her classmates signed up to read the tiny tome as a result. It was Pamela’s first brush with true power and it was intoxicating. Love affairs with The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden soon followed. Before very long, a grand obsession with all things related to Sherlock Holmes ensued. Ever fickle, Pamela moved on to a brief fling with Ellery Queen. Her short attention span regarding other equally engaging mystery writers soon became obvious to those who were paying attention. However, it should be said that Pamela wistfully returns from time to time to revisit these former loves and renew her passion.

Little did Pamela realize that a true career path had been decided upon. It would be years before this avenue would manifest after Pamela successfully dabbled in careers in advertising, television retailing and radio; eventually teaching in subjects related to all areas at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Pamela Rose currently lives in the mountains of North Carolina with her tuxedo cat Jake who amuses himself by impersonating a multi-syllabic, tirelessly fetch-playing dog. Also being of a benevolent mind, Jake graciously allows Pamela to serve as his personal valet in exchange for long periods of quiet in which to write.

5 STARS

I found myself smiling a lot while reading Sherlock's home. I loved the characters and hope they come back for more adventure. I did guess part of the mystery but it sure was fun to see it play out.
Finn and her twin sister Echo were raised by their Uncle Oz Sherlock. The three of them decided to move to new town and open up a bookstore and bakery. All three are close together. They do the baking together and work long hours.

They have decorated for Halloween and have treats to hand out. Oz is telling futures with a bag of old runes and a book. They have fun with that. We meet a lot of the town as they come through the stores.

Finn finds a body the day after Halloween in a secret passage way. Finn decides to help the sheriff find out who the murder is. He does not want her help it seems.

Finn and Echo like to tease their Uncle a lot. Their is a lot of wit and quotes going with the three of them. Only Oz is dating and they enjoy teasing him about the woman. Finn is getting over her divorce.

I want to see what happens on the cruise! I think it would be funny to see. At least I hope we get to see more of the Sherlocks in future books. I want to read about them.

Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires Blog Tour Review

Jack is back.
After his adventures at the Monster Hunter Academy (which included fighting a goblin army, befriending an ancient werewolf, and battling two fire breathing dragons), Jack Templar was hoping for a rest. No such luck.
In Book #3 of the Jack Templar Monster Hunter series, Jack embarks on a quest to track down and acquire the first of the five mythical Jerusalem Stones, an ancient power found by his ancestors the Templar Knights. Only the reunited Stones can stop Ren Lucre, the Dark Lord who holds Jack’s father hostage and prepares for an all-out war against an unsuspecting human world. But each Stone is held by a different Creach Lord and recovering them will not be easy. Jack and his friends begin their quest by seeking out one of the most powerful and dangerous keepers of the Stones, the Lord of the Vampires. The fate of the world rests on Jack’s shoulders and he will be tested like never before. But true monster hunters always do their duty…come what may.
Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires.

My Review: Jack Templar and the Lord of the Vampires Book 3

5 stars

I hated every time I had to put the book down. This is full of drama, action, danger and history. The worst part of reading this series is my memory of the previous books. I just could not take the time to read the other books again right now. The story went from one drama action scene to another the whole way. It did not slow down the pace.

I liked the characters. Even the monsters. When we see some of them by their selves you can see their personality in them. The human characters are growing with their experiences but also staying true to themselves. They have weaknesses, but more positive traits. They want to save the world and their friends. They don't to let each other down.

I did stop and look up some of the scenes in Paris on the internet because they were fascinating to read about. It is the only way I will see them.

Jack and his two best friends and two monster hunters are on a mission to find the five Jerusalem Stones and bring them back together so they can save the world from all the monsters reuniting to fight against and destroy mankind. The stones are with different groups of monsters.
They decide to go after the vampire one first.

Before they can even try and find the vampire leader and its lair they have to find a man that might be able to help them. They have to face lots of challenges first. Working together they solve some of the puzzles and fights.

This is a book aimed at middle school. Harry Potter, Percy Jackson or Ranger Apprentice fans would like this series. Where really all ages can enjoy it. It is exciting adventure.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it and join the blog tour.

For Kaeden Parish, life in Solace has always followed certain rules—everything makes sense, everything can be planned for, and everything is as it seems. Unfortunately, the secret harbored by his gorgeous, albeit guarded girlfriend is about to shatter all of that.

After a successful attack on his life opens his eyes to a world of war, shadows, and supernatural creatures—a world he didn’t plan for—Kaeden finds himself resembling the sort of monster he has always feared. As he desperately struggles to resist a new temptation, danger draws ever nearer, threatening the ones he loves most. A prophecy tells of a final battle and great destruction, and Kaeden must decide which side he is on, a choice that could mean the end of the world.

In Book 1 of the Solace Series, P.K. Gallagher pulls readers into a realm where good and evil are at war, and the outcome of it all rests on one young man’s decision to either go and live…or stay and die.

This is where the story of Parish begins.

Author P.K. Gallagher

Despite writing stories that take place almost exclusively in New England, speculative young adult fiction author P. K. Gallagher has lived in the suburbs of the south her entire life. It is to this that she attributes her love of the fantastic and the supernatural—writing such things was her only escape from the monotony of Suburbia. Gallagher graduated from Florida A&M University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a fervent desire to never set foot inside a newsroom again.

She currently lives in Atlanta and divides her time between working a day job, finishing her works in progress, and perfecting her plans for world domination.

My Review: Cerbers

4 stars

I wanted more! I hope the next book comes out quickly. This book has lots of different characters. Their is at least one war going on. and some how Kaeden a human is the center of it. By the time I thought I knew what was going on it through in some twists.

The war is between the Vampires and the dryyads. There are demons and fallen angels. Some of the vampires want to turn Kaeden because of a unclear prophecy. The dryyads want to kill him for some reason.
Kaeden wants to graduate. He takes the garbage out at work and is attacked and his life changes.

Kaeden's girlfriend is not what she seems. He does not understand what is going on and why certain groups want to kill him.

I did not want to put the book down and was disappointed when it ended.
This is full of drama, action and suspense. It is also a clean book but violent. I would not let to young of children read it. Might cause nightmares. Good book to read in Oct.

I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it and be part of it's book tour.

The Pitcher by William Hazelgrove – Blog Tour, Interview and Giveaway

William Hazelgrove answered some questions for me.
What are your favorite books?
Remains of the Day. Then we came to the End. Short Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Straight Man. Nobodies Fool. To Kill A Mockingbird. The Corrections. Freedom

Classics or new?

Probably a mix between classics and new

ebooks or hardback?

Again I do a real mix although I have a lot of books on my kindle.

What do you want your readers to get from your books?

Well I want to tell a good story first. But then I want the characters to be memorable. But I want them to feel a bit more enlightened when they finish. The Pitcher is an uplifting novel in that people find their way after a long struggle. I think most people can relate to that. Few people have it made and are not without some sort of struggle to find their place.

Do you ever go back and reread a book?

I reread books every day. Short stories and novels. I am a chronic re reader. If a book is really good then it is like reading it for the first time every time.

Thank you for answering my questions.

“I never knew I had an arm until this guy called out, “Hey you want to try and get a ball in the hole, sonny?” I was only nine, but mom said, “come on, let’s play.” This Carney guy with no teeth and a fuming cigarette hands me five blue rubber balls and says if I throw three in the hole we win a prize. He’s grinning, because he took mom’s five bucks and figures a sucker is born every minute. That really got me, because we didn’t have any money after Fernando took off, and he only comes back to beat up mom and steal our money. So I really wanted to get mom back something, you know, for her five bucks.”

A boy with a golden arm but no money for lessons. A mother who wants to give her son his dream before she dies. A broken down World Series pitcher who cannot go on after the death of his wife. These are the elements of The Pitcher. A story of a man at the end of his dream and a boy whose dream is to make his high school baseball team. In the tradition of The Natural and The Field of Dreams, this is a mythic story about how a man and a boy meet in the crossroads of their life and find a way to go on. You will laugh and you will cry as The Pitcher and Ricky prepare for the ultimate try out of life.
