A Ghostly Grave: A Ghostly Southern Mystery by Tonya Kappes

There's a ghost on the loose—and a fox in the henhouse

Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken's been pestering her to figure out who killed him.

With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken's widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something's definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it's not her luck.

  • My review: A Ghostly Grave: A Ghostly Southern Mystery  by Tonya Kappes

    4 STARS

This is book two in the A Ghostly Southern Mystery.  I have read both books and have enjoyed them.
A Ghostly Grave starts by digging up a grave.  They know he was murdered four years ago because his ghost Chicken  Teater told Emma Lee he was poisoned.

Emma Lee runs her family business, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home  with her older sister.  Emma is the undertaker. After a head injury Emma sees ghosts of murder victims.  Her family think she is crazy.  Her boyfriend believes her.

Sheriff Jack Henry Ross is now investigating the death of Chicken.  He wants Emma to stop investigating and just tell him what Chicken says.

Chicken Teater was married to a former Miss Kentucky.  He enters his chicken Lady Cluckington into contests and doted more on her than his wife. If his wife wants to inherit from Chicken she has to keep Lady Cluckington well and continue to enter her in contests.

Emma can not stop investigating Chicken's death.  Especially with Chicken always going with her and telling her stuff.

This has lots of humor, drama, mystery and action.  With a small town southern  flavor of characters.
I would read more from Tonya in the future.

I was given this ebook to read from Harper Collins and agreed to give honest review of A Ghostly Grave.

Part Time Cowboy by Maisey Yates

               ISBN9780373779598

    Description

A onetime bad girl comes home to small-town Oregon in the first in a sexy, heartfelt new series from USA TODAY bestselling author Maisey Yates

Sadie Miller isn't expecting any welcome-home parades on her return to Copper Ridge. Least of all from part-time rancher, full-time lawman Eli Garrett. The straitlaced, impossibly hot deputy sheriff glares at her as if she's the same teenage hoodlum who fled town ten years ago. But running from her demons has brought Sadie full circle, ready to make a commitment at last. Not to a man, but to a bed-and-breakfast. On Garrett land. Okay, so her plan has a tiny flaw…

Eli works too hard to let a blonde ball of trouble mess up his town. But keeping an eye on Sadie makes it tough to keep his hands off her. And if she's so wrong for him, why does being with her feel so right?

This was not for me.  I liked the characters and want to read more about them.  But there is so much sex in this book.  If you took those scenes out it would only be a short story.

This deals a lot with abuse by parents and mates.  Sadie Miller saw her father abuse her mother and she learned to not let people to close to her.  She never stays in a place too long and never looks back.
Now for the first time she has come back to a place she had lived before.

The Garrett family also was abused, but mostly by being left alone. Eli and Conner took care of the ranch and their little sister after their mother left them and their father became a drunk.
Eli became wanting to protect everyone.  He is a deputy Sheriff.  He never plans on marrying.  He is always in control.

The setting is in Oregon a small town on the coast.

I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin.  In return I agreed to give honest review in return.

    First love. Second chance?

As the daughter of a hoarder, Phoenix Fuller had a tough childhood. So when the handsome, popular Riley Stinson became her boyfriend in high school, she finally felt as though she had something to be proud of. Phoenix was desperate not to lose him—especially once she found out she was pregnant. Yes, she might have acted a bit obsessive when he broke up with her. But she did not run down the girl he started dating next.

Unfortunately, there was no way to prove her innocence. Now, after serving her time in prison, Phoenix has been released. All she wants to do is return to Whiskey Creek and get to know her son. But Jacob's father isn't exactly welcoming.

Riley doesn't trust Phoenix, doesn't want her in Jacob's life. He is, however, ready to find someone to love. And he wants a good mother for his son. He has no idea that he's about to find both!

I wondered if I would like Phoenix as much as I would because of how everyone talked about her in past books of Whiskey Creek.  I did like her. She was human and willing to sacrifice for her son.  She had a lot of pride. She spent 17 years in prison for a murder she says she did not do it.

Phoenix Fuller is back home in Whiskey Creek. She lives on the property of her mom in a trailer. She was pregnant when she was 18 and convicted of murder. Her mother is over weight and a hoarder. She does not get out of her house.

Riley Stinson was a contractor.  He raised his son by himself.  He believed that Phoenix murdered his girl friend 17 years ago because she was jealous.  At times I did not like him much. But he did trust his parents when he was 18.

Jacob is glad that his mom is out of prison he wants to have a relationship with her.  He is a baseball player for his high school team.

This is the #8 book of Whiskey Creek series.  Deals with a big group of friends from high school that they are still close friends and meet each Friday for coffee.

There is a lot of drama, a couple of love scenes and makes for a good story.

I was given this ebook to read from Net Galley and Harlequin.  In return I agreed to give a honest review of This Heart of Mine.

  • My review: First Time in Forever by Sarah Morgan

    4 stars

I loved Puffin Island.  What a community!  I want to visit it again real soon.   The characters I want to see more of them and don't want to wait.  It is charming, fun and deals with some real issues. There are a couple of love scenes that I skimmed over.

Emily Donovan is single and has a real fear of water.  She has gone through a lot of changes in the past month.  She is scared, panicking at all of a sudden to have to mother her six year old niece.  Emily had never met before.  Emily is staying at her best friend's cottage on Puffin island.

Emily, Brittany and Skylar have been best friends for ten years.  They have promised to be there for each other.  They are closer than sisters.

Lizzy is a cute six year old.  Her mother just died.  She is afraid of cameraman,   She is being hunted by reporters.

Ryan Cooper is planning on being single for life.  He does not date single mothers.  He is asked to check up on Emily and help her.  He realizes that she is scared right away and wants to know why.
Ryan has returned back home to Puffin and opened a business.

I liked how Emily is slowly changing and working to get over her fears for Lizzy's sake.  How she sees a need in someone else life and she steps in to make a difference.

I will be waiting for the next two books of the series.
I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin.  In return I agreed to give First Time in Forever a honest review.

I received a PDF file of this book to read and I love the artwork, the calligraphy of it.  It probably is more beautiful in a book.

The Olive Tree is taken from the scriptures in the Book of Mormon Jacob:5.  They have made the story come alive with the pictures.  To help you understand the symbolism of the story.

I would love to have the book in my home.  I would even like some of the pictures for my wall they are so beautiful.

Three sisters got together to bring this book to life, One is the writer, one a artist and one did the calligraphy of the book and together they made one beautiful book and story of The Olive Tree come alive.

Did someone kill him to get to it first? With the help of Jackson and her eccentric ex-boyfriend, Willow follows the clues to uncover the truth that someone wants buried…
But can she dig up enough evidence before she becomes the killer’s next victim?

    About This Author
I love natural remedies and I’ve been using them for as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, my mother practiced natural cures such as tea bag baths for sunburn, homeopathic remedies for colds and allergies, arnica oil for sprains and bruises and, of course, chicken soup with garlic was always a staple.
My interest in natural remedies continued after I graduated from Boston University with a degree in communications and subsequently dabbled in various vocations including advertising and television production in Hollywood. In 1998 I moved back to my hometown, Greenport, NY and set up my own writing business. I’d always wanted to be my own boss and write full-time.
My focus was, and is, health, and in particular alternative medicine which includes natural remedies. As a freelance journalist, I’ve written about natural cures for Natural Health, Mother Earth Living, Spirituality & Health, and Vegetarian Times, as for over five years I was the Good Nature columnist for Remedy magazine.

My review: Garden of Death by Chrystle Fiedler

    4 stars

This is exciting mystery.  Murder, pirate treasure and romance.  Lots of suspects,  don't know who to trust. It is a clean read. Makes me want to go and visit the festival and see Nature's Way Market & Café.

Willow McQuade has got her medicinal garden ready to open.   Nature’s Way Market & Café is owned by Willow. Her boyfriend is Jackson Spade.

The lot that she put her garden in was next door to her business.  For some reason she won the right to own the land.  Which made her a lot of enemies that wanted that property but lost the bid.

When checking the garden for the first tour she finds a dead body in the garden. Dr. Charles White.  He accused her the night before of cheating to get the property.  Willow's boyfriend becomes the main suspect.

Willow has solved other cases of murder this past year.  Her ex-boyfriend Simon and others want her to solve this one.  The detectives don't like her and her friends.

People are trying to shut her Garden down and calling it a Garden of Death.  Really bitter and angry results it causes.

Someone is looking for things in the garden at night.  They even find some treasure in the garden but the cops don't listen to her.

In front of each chapter is a medical herb that she likes and tells what it has been used for in the past. It is interesting and a good start to find out about the plants.

I like Willow and her friends.  I want to read the first two books of the series now.

I was given Garden of Death to read so that I could give a honest review and be part of Garden of Death book tour.

The McKinleys...Where Mystery and Romance Meet (Books 1-3) (McKinley Mysteries) by Carolyn Arnold

The McKinleys...where mystery and romance meet. From bestselling author, Carolyn Arnold, comes Sean and Sara McKinley.
The McKinley Mystery Series combines romance, mystery, humor, and adventure. They are free of foul language and graphic violence.
Enjoy this boxed set, which includes the first three McKinley Mysteries: The Day Job is Murder (An introductory short story, approximately 13,000 words.) Vacation is Murder (A novella, approximately 26,000 words.) Money is Murder (A novella, approximately 28,000 words.) ˃˃˃ THE DAY JOB IS MURDER
For Sean McKinley, working in Albany PD Homicide is great except for one thing--he's in love with his partner Sara Cain. And even though she feels the same way about him, she convinced him they should just remain friends. Two years later, nothing has changed.
Yet, during the course of a murder investigation, when Sean finds out an old friend has died, it results in something that has the potential to change his life--and Sara's--forever.
It goes to prove one unexpected act of kindness has the power to ripple throughout the years and bring happiness...even when The Day Job is Murder.
    ˃˃˃ VACATION IS MURDER
There's only so much relaxation two former detectives can handle--even if they're on their honeymoon. With their recent fall into money, Sean and Sara McKinley should be living it up, enjoying the sun and beaches of Cancun. But heading into their third week they've had just about enough lying around.
When the husband of a couple they've befriended is kidnapped and held for ransom, it has the McKinleys putting their experience to use. As they set out in the unfamiliar landscape of paradise, the investigation will have them risking their lives to stop a killer.
    ˃˃˃ MONEY IS MURDER
Old Man Quinn left Sean more than his billions--he left him a murder to solve.
Inside the chest given to him from the executor of Quinn's Will, Sean finds a key and implicit instructions that the contents are for his eyes only. After Sean discovers where the key fits, he finds another letter--Quinn wants a closed case reopened, and Sean is shocked to learn who the victim was.
As Sean and his wife, Sara, uncover clues, it leads them from the back rooms of Quinn's corporation to the streets of New York City, but they will stop at nothing to get to the truth.

My review: The McKinleys...Where Mystery and Romance Meet (Books 1-3) (McKinley Mysteries) by Carolyn Arnold
    4 STARS
This is the first three books in the McKinley Mysteries.  I had read the new book and liked it so much I went and bought these.  Now I am on the 4 book of the series.
In the first book Sean McKinley and Sara are partners and cops.  They love each other  but agree to not date so they can remain partners.  Sean was left something in the will of a kindly man.  He did not know that the guy had billions  and left everything to Sean.
Sean and Sara McKinley have quit there job and got married.  They were on a honeymoon in Mexico.  They met new friends and one of them is kidnapped.  Sean and 'Sara get involved.
In the third book they are home from there honeymoon and find a letter asking them to solve his late daughter's murder.  Quin had left Sean billions so they went up to New York and look into Cindy's suicide.
These are likeable characters.  It would be fun to have the whole world open to you.  Sean and Sara keep finding themselves involved in solving crimes. These are shorter novellas. Clean reads.
The setting is from New York to Mexico. They are a good pace.

This is a hoot. Granny is at it again.  This cozy mystery if full of twists, surprises, animals and weddings.  I needed a laugh today.  This is a clean read.

Granny is the main character.  She is going to get married the day after Christmas to Franklin Gatsby.
She keeps secrets from everyone.  She lies and goes her own way.  She has dogs, cats & a goat.  They roam between her house and Franklin's house.

There are lots of new characters in this third book.  One is her new neighbor Silas.  He is retired and has secrets of his own.  Granny does not pull the wool over his eyes much.  She is fighting with him and he with her.

A snow storm as snuck and Silas barges into Granny's basement to the secret door that is no longer secret to the underground street.  It is open now with shops having doors open to it too.  So Granny decides to go to town to. She comes back on a snowmobile with Silas on the back with her. and crashes in her yard and they find a dead body.

Franklin wants Granny to mind her own business and let her son the detective figure out what is going on.

I liked the story but did not like the ending. What did Granny see?  I did not guess who the bad guys were and why they were doing all that they were doing?

I would like to visit Fuchsia, Minnesota in the summer time.  It is a fun town with lots of crooks and crime and feisty seniors.

My review: Summer Campaign by Carla Kelly

    4 stars

This is a good clean regency romance.  I liked the characters, liked the banter, lots of drama.  Dealing with PTSD but they did not call it that, drug use, about judging others by their birth.  It is good at keeping my attention.

Miss Onyx Hamilton had a good life till her adoptive father died.  She was not accepted by the rest of her family. She is sweet , smart, and kind.  She is engaged to marry a man of the cloth.

Onyx is in a coach to go and set up her future home when she was being robbed and worst when she is rescued.
Major Jack Beresford is on his way home after being away four years to war in Spain. He takes a hand rescuing  Onyx. He is wounded. Onyx than rescues him.

I like Jack and Onyx together they are struggling with different issues but get along really well and enjoy there make believe life.

The setting takes place in England during the Regency era.

My review: A Mother’s Greatest Gift’ by Heidi Poelman

    5 STARS

This is a inspired book for all who are raising children.  To share important lessons from mothers when they have felt the spirit guiding them to protect there children, to teach there children important life lessons, to inspire mothers, grandmothers in the future.

This is full of real life stories that mothers have shared.  It brought memories of examples I had bringing up my own children, some good ones and some areas I need to work on.

I love the feeling I got from reading this book.  The love of families, the important of raising children and teaching them. To help them make good choices, to give them skills for the future.

I am glad that I had the opportunity to read this book by Heidi Poelman. I would like to read more books from her in the future.

The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice by Waverly Curtis

"A whole lot of fun!" --Seattle Times
"I have the body of a Chihuahua, but the mind of a master sleuth." Aspiring P.I. Geri Sullivan's new case has got her talking Chihuahua, Pepe, hot under the collar. Wealthy widow Lucille Carpenter left her entire fortune to her beloved dogs, and someone is trying to poison them. Anyone who would hurt a perro is lower than a cucaracha in Pepe's book. But when Geri and Pepe investigate, they discover that it's not just the coddled canines who are in danger. Now there are human targets too. At the lavish Carpenter manor, Pepe digs for clues among the pampered pooches, bitter relatives, suspicious staff, and larcenous lawyers. But there's only one diminutive detective smart enough to save the day--and the dogs…

  • My review: The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice by Waverly Curtis

    4 STARS

The Chihuahua Always Sniff Twice is the fourth book of the Barking Detective Mystery.  It is the first one I have read.  I would love to go and read the other books in the series.

This is a cute story. The Chihuahua Pepe talks but only to P.I. Geri Sullivan his partner owner.  Some scenes will have you laughing out loud especially the bus chases.

Geri Sullivan is the main character.  She is learning how to be a PI. Geri has a cat and Pepe. Lots of people think she is kind of crazy because  she talks to Pepe and she hears him too.

Pepe is a talking Chihuahua who is working as a detective too. Pepe talks tough like he is a alpha dog but actions are different.  Pepe also falls in love. Pepe is very bossy to Geri.

Wealthy widow Lucille Carpenter  died and left her money to her dogs.  Now her kids want to break the will. Someone is trying to kill the dogs.

Geri is sent in to find who is trying to kill the dog.  But there is a couple of murders are happening.  Her boss is going behind her back and is being mysterious.

The setting is in Washington during in lavender festival.

I was given this ebook by Net Galley and Kensington Books to read.  So I can give an honest review of The Chihuahua Always Sniffs Twice.

    Welcome to Tangerine Street

Tangerine Street is a must-see tourist stop with a colorful mix of one-of-a-kind boutiques, unique restaurants, eclectic museums, quaint bookstores, and renowned bed-and-breakfasts. The Boardwalk Antiques Shop is an exclusive shop where every antique has a story, and each story possesses the gift to match true love. The customer who buys an antique also buys its story and soon discovers that its story unites the past with the present, creating an unexpected romantic future…

“Where Every Antique has a Story”

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: Jennifer is newest owner of The Boardwalk Antiques Shop, inherited from her aunt. When Jennifer arrives in Seashell Beach, her first priority is to meet with a realtor to sell the place. She laughs out loud when she discovers the realtor’s name is Mr. Studly. But the more Jennifer gets to know Paul Studly, the more she finds reasons to stay and run the antiques shop herself.

SOLVING FOR X: Abbie is only a little bit obsessed with antiques, okay, a lot. So when Holden, an out-of-town business executive, tries to purchase the tin soldiers that Abbie’s had her eye on, Abbie refuses to back down. The antiques shop owner issues a challenge: whoever comes up with the best story for wanting the soldiers, will become the new owner. Abbie isn’t about to let some fancy executive beat her out, no matter how charming he is.

A STITCH IN TIME: When Cate learns that antiques dealer Henry Lancaster has purchased the sewing machine left to her by her grandmother, Cate is determined to get it back. What she isn’t counting on is that Henry has just as much claim as Cate. And it doesn’t help that Henry is good-looking and apparently single. Getting to know Henry becomes an unexpected surprise, sending her life into a sudden detour.

Other books in the Tangerine Street Romance series: The Fortune Café. Books can be read in any order.

My review: Boardwalk Antiques Shop by Julie Wright, Melanie Jacobson & Heather B. Moore
    4 stars
This is the second book in A Tangerine Street Romance.  It follows The Fortune Café.  The Fortune Café was visited in the stories but just casual.

There are three stories by three different authors.  There is plenty of drama, romance and characters that I liked.  They were  pretty clean stories.  Some mild swearing.  I can't decide what stories I like better.

The setting is a small California beach community.  They all have a love of old things like Antiques.  In fact a few fights for the same antiques.

There is plenty of humor and laughter in the stories.  There is also some sad times too.  Dealing with lost of loved ones and what they were left.

Based on these  stories I would read more books from Julie Wright, Melanie Jacobson and Heather B. Moore.

    I liked Boardwalk Antiques.

I was given this ebook to read by the authors.  In return I agreed to give a honest review of it.
